Description

The annual competition for admission to the 4P Training Program generally occurs in the Spring. It is aimed at PhD students and Post-doctoral enrolled in a participating Quebec or Canadian university (see list below), who wish to pursue their research in a Public Health Setting . Other universities and departments may be eligible.

Awards

Candidates admitted to the Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships Competition of the 4P Training Program receive a scholarship of 3 years for a PhD and of 2 years for a Post-doctorate. During their studies, Fellows are encouraged to apply for funding from a recognized funding agency. As an incentive, those who achieve success will receive a complementary award from the 4P Training Program.
  • PhD Fellowships: $ 21,000 or more/year

  • Post Doctoral Fellowships: $ 36,750 or more/year

Exceptionally, and after assessing the proposals, an additional year of fellowship may be granted.

Eligibility

Doctoral students or Post-doc enrolled in a participating university department may submit their applications to the 4P Training Program. Students enrolled in a university which is not a partner and/or non-traditional discipline of public health (eg political science) are also encouraged to submit their applications, provided their conduct research in a training setting recognized by the 4P Training Program (see Program Mentors) and participate in required training activities. Graduate students enrolled in an accelerated program to the PhD are also eligible.

Students funded by other funding agencies and researchers on sabbatical leave may, in turn, receive complementary funding in order to participate in the 4P Training Program.

The thesis director or co-supervisor must be a 4P Training Program Mentor ( see the "Mentors & Fellows" section).

The thesis project or postdoctoral research theme should focus on public health interventions (promotion, prevention and public policy), and be approached from a transdisciplinary perspective. It must be previously validated with officials of the training setting.


Evaluation Criteria

Priority is given to students whose project clearly defines the transdisciplinary aspects and requires supervision of mentors from more than one discipline .
  • Relevance (appropriateness of the research with regard to the 4P Training Program objectives and public health priorities; support of the public health organization where research will be conducted and quality of the supervision; student interest).

  • Scientific quality of the research project (purpose and design appropriate for intervention research, clarity of the description of the scientific issues and the statement of the objectives and methodology; originality of the project and advancement of knowledge to reduce social inequalities in health; proof of transdisciplinary scope)

  • Quality and excellence of the candidate’s academic file; scientific aptitude, experience and productivity (letter of recommendation from university supervisors.

Letters of recommendation from teachers and university supervisors and a letter of support from the public health setting are considered.
