Competition 2021-2022 – New strategies in research or health/social care practices in global health - during and post-pandemic 

Introduction

The Global Health Axis and GHR-CAPS, the Global Health Research Capacity Strengthening Program are launching a competition to support the creation of exchange platforms, virtual events, online tools or other resources or strategies that would help global health researchers (including students), and other stakeholders such as health care practitioners adapt to the circumstances of the pandemic and beyond. Indeed, many have had to revise their strategies and practices due to the pandemic. What have we learned? Which procedures, methodologies, adaptations have proven to be successful, and which will continue to be useful in a post-pandemic world? Or, in contrast, which procedures and approaches have had to be abandoned, and with what impact?

The Global Health Axis and the GHR-CAPS program welcomes all proposals. Proposals may include but are not limited to: 

• Virtual conference/colloquium
• Webinar(s)
• Online videos
• Creation of a discussion forum
• Online training modules
• Filmed interviews or personal stories
• Scientific report
• Sharing via an online platform, an organized event, or a report, of research projects and methodologies in global health that showed to be adapted (or not) to the circumstances of the pandemic.
• Sharing via an online platform, an organized event or a report of strategies aimed at developing and strengthening research capacities of global health students that showed to be adapted to (or not) to the circumstances of the pandemic.
• Sharing via an online platform, an organized event or a report of health/social care practices in global health that showed to be adapted (or not) to the circumstances of the pandemic.
• Or any other proposal that addresses the objectives described in this competition. Note that “global health” includes health and health/social care for indigenous peoples, migrants, refugees and for populations in low or middle-income countries.

The network has a budget of 20’000$ to support several projects. The maximum support for a single project is 10’000$. 

Examples of eligible expenses include:

• Salary of a student to organize an event, and/or to develop content for an event, online resource, or platform
• Professional fees/honorariums related to the creation of material
• Fees/compensation for technical services (platform building, filming, video editing, etc.)

Eligibility criteria

• Be a regular member or a student member of the Network. Note that the funds can only be transferred to a regular member of the Network, thus the team must include at least one regular member of the Network who would be responsible for the funds.
• The project must be completed within one year following the announcement of the competition results.
• The funding provided by the Network may be complementary to other financial support received from other organizations, provided that the planned activities are not already funded. Please contact us if there is any uncertainty.
• A same researcher can apply and/or appear as the principal investigator or co-investigator in several applications to the QPHRN research projects competitions underway. Yet, for equity reasons, a same researcher cannot be funded more than once per year in these competitions. If any researcher appears in multiple applications, priority may be given to the application that gets the highest evaluation score.

Applications

Applications must be submitted as one single attachment (Microsoft Word or PDF file) via electronic mail – by mentioning “Competition 2021-2022 – New strategies in global health” by the application deadline (June 17, 2021) to the following address: thierry.hurlimann@umontreal.ca. Applications will be a maximum of five pages (font Calibri size 12, spacing 1 ½). In addition, the principal applicant - and the “regular” member who would be responsible for the funds, if the application is submitted by a student - must attach a brief CV (3 pages). Longer CVs will not be accepted.

Content of the Application:

Page 1: 

• The name, affiliation and contact details (address, phone, email) of the principal applicant 
• The name and affiliation of co-applicants 
• The title of the project and its format, (e.g., platform, organized event, online publication, scientific report)
• The budget amount requested from the RRSPQ 
• A justification of the budget requested 
• The amount of any other sources of funding
• Please suggest two or three potential evaluators (names and emails) who would have the expertise, and no conflicts of interest, to review your application. It is not required that they be members of the QPHRN.

Pages 2-5 :

• The context, objectives, and target population (0.5 - 1 page)
• Description of the project (what it will entail exactly, e.g., for an event, the preliminary program; for learning modules, an outline of the content) (1-2 pages)
• Relevance and potential impact of the project (0.5- 1 page)
• The work plan including strategies for dissemination (e.g., who will be involved and how, expertise and skills required), and the timeline (1 page)
• A brief justification of how the project meets the strategic priorities of the Global Health Axis and its research capacity strengthening program, GHR-CAPS
• Any other information that may be relevant for evaluating the relevance and impact of the project (see the Evaluation Criteria)

Evaluation criteria

Applications will be evaluated by a committee established by the Global Health Axis according to the following criteria: 

• Clarity of the objectives, project description and work plan
• Potential of the project to contribute to global health research, research capacity strengthening, or health/social care practices
• Potential of the project to reach and impact many researchers, students, and/or other stakeholders such as health/social care practitioners 
• Feasibility
• Congruence with the mission and goals of the Global Health Axis and of its research capacity strengthening program
• Interdisciplinary, interinstitutional and intersectoral aspects
• Potential for the development of new collaborations and research projects or structuring effects

Commitments

• Recipients agree to publish the title and summary of their project on the QPHRN website once the results are announced.
• At the end of the project, researchers must submit a financial report as well as a scientific report that includes the project’s outcomes and impacts. A scientific report and/or a link to the project (e.g., training modules, webinars, …) must be published on the QPHRN website.
• The RRSPQ financial contribution must be explicitly mentioned 1) in all promotion material, with the logo of the RRSPQ; 2) in all resulting publications or communications. The following acknowledgment is suggested:
  « Les organisateurs remercient le Réseau de recherche en santé des populations du Québec (RRSPQ)— Axe Santé mondiale – pour sa contribution au financement de ce [choisir le terme approprié : webinaire, colloque virtuel, …] »
  “The organizers thank the Quebec Population Health Research Network (QPHRN)—Global Health Axis – for its contribution to the financing of this [choose appropriate: webinar, virtual symposium, …]”
• Recipients could be asked to attend and present their project at the QPHRN or Global Health Axis Annual Scientific Day. If this event cannot be held due to the pandemic, a short video presentation – that would be published on the RRSPQ website - could be requested.
